AYON Wind · Guide

Best time to kitesurf in Ceará.

Ceará offers something very few kite destinations on earth can match: wind you can actually plan a trip around. While many spots give you three or four rideable days a week if you're lucky, this coast routinely delivers six or seven — for months at a stretch.

Why the wind is so reliable here

Ceará sits close to the equator, and the coastline runs almost parallel to the trade winds sweeping in off the Atlantic. With no mountains or headlands to disrupt the airflow, wind arrives clean and consistent rather than gusty and unpredictable. Add a daily thermal effect — the land heating faster than the sea and pulling wind in to fill the gap — and you get conditions that build reliably through the late morning and hold into the afternoon on most days during season.

Month by month

June – July

Season is ramping up. Wind is present most days but not yet at peak strength — a good window if you want fewer crowds.

August – September

Among the strongest, most consistent months of the year, especially around Cumbuco. Expect wind most days, often into the mid-20-knot range and higher.

October – November

Peak season further north. Jericoacoara and Preá often see their strongest, most reliable conditions here, sometimes gusting past 30 knots in the afternoon.

December – January

Still strong across most spots, tapering slightly by late January closer to Fortaleza, while northern spots like Jericoacoara can hold on longer.

February – May

The rainy season. Not windless — roughly 60% wind guarantee — but less predictable. Rain tends to fall in short, heavy bursts rather than all day. Plan for a slightly bigger kite and flexible dates.

Does it matter which spot you choose?

Yes. As a rule, the further north and west you travel along the coast — from Cumbuco toward Taíba, Icaraí, and eventually Jericoacoara — the stronger the wind gets and the longer the season runs. If you're chasing maximum wind and can only travel once, Jericoacoara and Preá are the safest bet for consistency. If convenience matters more, Cumbuco's season is nearly as long and it's a fraction of the drive from the airport.
