Surf forecast: Caponga.
Almost everything written about surfing in Ceará looks west from Fortaleza toward the kite coast. Caponga, in Cascavel, is the defensible pick going the other way — a quality east-coast beach that works when the North Atlantic groundswell is running.

How it works here
Requires N to NE swell like the rest of the state, and delivers when it arrives. Being southeast of Fortaleza it draws a different, smaller crowd than the western beaches, and it is a genuine alternative when the coast west of the city is crowded or blown out.
- Bottom
- Sand.
Best season
November through March on N/NE swell, overlapping the regional December-to-April window.
Conditions by level
Manageable on a smaller day, though there are better-supported learning beaches closer to Fortaleza.
The main audience for this spot — good waves without the crowd of the western coast.
Worth the drive on a solid N/NE swell, particularly to escape the Fortaleza crowds.
Watch out for
- It needs genuine N/NE swell — on the wrong direction there is little point making the drive.
- Fewer surf services than the western beaches; come self-sufficient.
Getting there
In Cascavel, southeast of Fortaleza — the opposite direction from the kite coast, which is much of its appeal.
Frequently asked questions
Is Caponga worth visiting from Fortaleza?
On a solid N or NE swell, yes. It is the best-documented surf option on the coast southeast of the city, and it draws a much smaller crowd than the beaches heading west toward the kite towns.
