Surf forecast: Jericoacoara.
Jericoacoara is world-famous for wind and dunes, and the surf lives in that shadow — which is precisely why the lineup is empty while the town is packed. Jeri is really two different waves: the beach in front of the village is a long, mellow point that is one of the better longboard waves in Brazil, while Praia da Malhada around the headland is a faster, bigger left for shortboards.

How it works here
Sand mixed with rock, taking N to NNE swell — locals single out NNE as the direction that fits the seafloor properly. The village wave starts working around a metre to a metre and a half and stays forgiving well past that; Malhada is the one that gets serious. The season here is defined less by when swell arrives than by when the wind stops ruining it, which is why Jeri's surf window sits later than the rest of the coast.

- Sand mixed with rock.
Best season
December through April, best January through April. The village longboard wave is at its best through January.
Tide at Jericoacoara
Sources contradict each other on Jeri's tide preference, so we are not going to pick one. Given the 2–3 m range, watching a cycle before your first session is worth more than any published label.
The tide reading at the top of this page is live — rising or falling right now, and the next high or low, from modeled sea level, not an official harmonic tide table.
For the official tide table for Jericoacoara and the Ceará coast, use Marinha do Brasil's tide tables (Centro de Hidrografia da Marinha) — the Fortaleza/Mucuripe station covers this stretch.
Conditions by level
The village wave on a smaller day is genuinely gentle and forgiving — one of the more pleasant places on this coast to be a beginner, with a longboard under you.
Long, mellow rides in front of the village, with Malhada available as the step up when you want more out of the day.
Praia da Malhada is the wave worth your time here — a fast left that gets properly good. An honest caveat from local surfers: most would not make the trip to Jeri for the surf alone.
Watch out for
- Wind arriving hard and early in the windy months — in season the surf window can close well before mid-morning.
- Rock mixed into the sand, especially around the Malhada headland.
- Currents near the river mouth and lagoon areas by the village.
- Buggy and beach traffic at the popular access points.
Getting there
Roughly four to five hours by car from Fortaleza, or a short flight. Most visitors build a multi-day trip around the wind, dunes and lagoons, with the wave as a genuine bonus rather than the reason for going.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a tide table for Jericoacoara?
AYON Wave doesn't publish a fixed tide table for Jericoacoara. It shows the live tide at the top of the spot page — rising or falling and the next high or low, from modeled sea level — alongside how the tide changes this wave. For the official tide table, use Marinha do Brasil (the Fortaleza/Mucuripe station covers the Ceará coast).
Is Jericoacoara worth visiting just to surf?
Honestly, no — and local surfers say the same. Jeri is a wind and scenery destination that happens to have decent waves, and the surf alone would not justify the journey. What it does offer is a rare combination: real waves with almost no surfers in the water, in a town full of people.
What is the difference between the village wave and Praia da Malhada?
The beach in front of the village is a long, mellow point, one of Brazil's better longboard waves and at its best through January. Praia da Malhada, around the headland, is a faster and bigger left suited to shortboards and experienced surfers.
When should I surf in Jericoacoara?
December through April, with January to April the best of it. Within the day, aim early: the wind that makes Jeri a kiting capital is the same wind that ends the surf session, and in the windy months it arrives well before midday.
