Praia do Futuro is Fortaleza's main surf beach: seven or eight kilometres of open sand running from the Mucuripe headland down to the mouth of the Rio Cocó, with lefts and rights over shifting bars. It is the democratic wave of the city — whitewater by the barracas for first-timers, genuinely serious peaks in the middle — and it is credible enough to have hosted a WSL Qualifying Series QS2000 in December 2025, won by two local surfers, Michel Roque and Juliana Santos.

How it works here
An open, north-facing beach break with no reef or headland to focus the swell, so it takes N to NE energy more forgivingly than Titanzinho but has nothing to shelter it from wind. Typical size is around a metre. The bars shift, which is the point: the best sandbanks move, and locals check the beach rather than assuming a peak. The stretches near Abreulândia and Avenida Zezé Diogo are the ones most often reported working.

Best season
December through April, peaking February and March — with the caveat that this is a wave you check on the day. The WSL running its Fortaleza event here in mid-December is a fair signal of when the swell becomes reliable.
Tide at Praia do Futuro
Reported to favour mid-to-high tide, though as a multi-kilometre beach break the honest answer is that different bars prefer different stages. With a 2–3 m range the waterline moves a long way, so the peak that worked yesterday may not be the one working now.

Conditions by level
The most beginner-friendly wave in Fortaleza — sand bottom, plenty of whitewater near the beach clubs, and several schools teaching daily. Stay well clear of the rip-prone stretches.
Kilometres of beach means you can nearly always find your own peak away from the crowd — a good place to log volume without lineup pressure.
The central peaks get genuinely serious on a good swell. It hosted a WSL QS2000 for a reason, even if an advanced surfer visiting Ceará will usually rate Paracuru's points higher.
Watch out for
- Strong rip currents are the headline hazard here — they are what the beach is known for, not the waves.
- Backwash on bigger days and higher tides.
- Water quality swings sharply with rain. In one May 2026 SEMACE bulletin all ten monitored points along this beach were rated unfit for bathing. Check the current weekly bulletin rather than any fixed claim, including this one.
- Crowds and beach-club traffic at the main access points, especially at weekends.
Getting there
A short drive or rideshare from downtown Fortaleza, with beach-club access points offering chairs, food and bathrooms the length of the strand — the easiest surf check in the city.

It varies week to week and depends heavily on rain. SEMACE monitors ten points along this beach and publishes a weekly bathing-quality bulletin; readings have ranged from the entire beach passing to all ten points failing. The reliable rule is to stay out of the water for a day or two after heavy rain and check the current bulletin before you go.
How is Praia do Futuro different from Titanzinho?
Titanzinho is a single defined right-hander beside the port jetty, rock-influenced and sheltered from the wind, with a committed local crew. Praia do Futuro is kilometres of open, shifting sand peaks — easier to find space on, far more exposed to wind, and much more rip-prone.
