Kitesurfing Atins.
At the mouth of the Rio Preguiças, where the Lençóis Maranhenses dunes meet the Atlantic, Atins is the wildest marquee spot on Brazil's wind coast — a sand-street village with flat river water on one side, open ocean on the other, and a national park of white dunes and lagoons at its back.

How the wind works
The same South Atlantic trade wind that drives Ceará arrives here from the E to ENE, typically side to side-off along the river mouth and side-onshore on the ocean beach. The season starts earlier than most riders expect — the wind is usually working by July — and holds through December. The daily rhythm mirrors the rest of the coast: building through late morning, peaking in the afternoon.
Best season
July through December. The early months (July–August) often surprise riders used to Ceará's later start; September to November is the strongest, steadiest stretch here too.
Conditions by level
The inside of the river mouth at mid-to-high tide offers flat, shallow water — but currents demand respect and local guidance. Take lessons with a local school rather than self-teaching here.
Flat-water runs along the river at the right tide, mellow ocean riding out front, and the shorter downwind legs along the park's edge — Atins rewards a rider who can hold ground upwind and read moving water.
This is the launchpad for the Lençóis expedition runs and the multi-day legs west toward the Parnaíba Delta — remote, spectacular downwinders that demand planning, boat or 4×4 support, and a confirmed pickup.
Watch out for
- Tidal current in the Rio Preguiças mouth — it runs hard on the ebb and can pull a swimmer or a downed rider seaward. Know the tide before you launch.
- The tide transforms the spot: sandbars, channels and the rideable flat sections all move between low and high water.
- Remoteness is the real hazard — services are minimal, rescue is informal, and the coast west of the village is genuinely empty. Never ride the outside alone.
- Protected park areas border the spot — respect local guidance on where launching and land-based activities are allowed.
Getting there
Fly to São Luís (SLZ), drive about four hours to Barreirinhas, then reach Atins by boat down the Rio Preguiças or by 4×4 along the beach. Some riders come from the east via the Rota das Emoções from Jericoacoara. Book transfers ahead — there is no walk-up logistics here.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to kitesurf in Atins?
July through December. The wind starts earlier here than in most of Ceará — often rideable by July — with the strongest, steadiest stretch from September to November.
Is Atins good for beginners?
The flat water inside the river mouth is inviting, but tidal current makes local guidance essential. Learn with one of the village schools rather than self-teaching, and treat the tide table as part of the lesson.
How do you get to Atins?
Fly to São Luís (SLZ), drive roughly four hours to Barreirinhas, then take a boat down the Rio Preguiças or a 4×4 along the beach. Coming from the east, riders arrive from Jericoacoara via the Rota das Emoções.
Can you kite inside the Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons?
The rain-fed lagoons inside the park are generally protected and not a kite venue — the riding is at the coastal edge: the river mouth, the ocean beach, and downwind legs along the park boundary. Follow local guidance on where launching is allowed.
