AYON Wind · Spot guide

Kitesurfing São Luís — Praia de São Marcos.

São Luís is the rare state capital with a real kite scene at its front door. Praia de São Marcos, on the city's Atlantic edge, catches the same trades as the rest of the northeast — but it rides on one of the biggest tidal ranges in Brazil, and that tide writes the rules here.

How the wind works

The trade wind arrives E to ENE through the second half of the year, side-onshore along São Marcos and the neighboring beaches, with the usual afternoon thermal peak. What makes the spot different is underneath: the Baía de São Marcos has a tidal range that reaches several meters on spring tides, so the beach, the shorebreak, the sandbars and the current all change dramatically within a single session.

Best season

July through December, in step with the rest of the Maranhão coast — strongest and steadiest from September to November.

Conditions by level

Beginner

Only with a local school, and only on their schedule — the working window depends on the tide, and the instructors here plan sessions around it. The beach at mid tide is wide and forgiving; the water demands supervision.

Intermediate

Solid side-onshore riding with moderate chop through the season. Learn the tide table like the locals do: the same beach is a different spot at low, mid, and high water.

Advanced

Strong-wind afternoons, urban convenience, and a local community that rides year-round when the season is on. Respect the ebb current — it is the one factor here that outranks skill.

Watch out for

  • The tidal current — the Baía de São Marcos moves enormous volumes of water, and the ebb can carry a rider away from the beach fast. This is the hazard that has driven real search-and-rescue operations here. Check the tide table before every session and avoid the strongest ebb hours.
  • The beach profile changes by hundreds of meters between tides — where you launch is not where you will land hours later.
  • Urban beach traffic: swimmers, football games, vendors and vehicles share the sand — keep your lines clear and your landing zone conservative.
  • Tell someone your plan. On an out-to-sea current, the minutes before anyone realizes you are missing are the minutes that matter most.

Getting there

Fly directly into São Luís (SLZ) — the beach is a short drive from anywhere in the city. São Marcos and the adjacent Ponta d'Areia strip are the established riding zones, with the local scene concentrated around the beach kiosks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you kitesurf in São Luís?

Yes — Praia de São Marcos, on the city's Atlantic side, is the established spot, with a local community riding the E/ENE trades from July to December. It's one of the few Brazilian state capitals with a genuine kite scene at its doorstep.

What makes São Marcos different from other northeast Brazil spots?

The tide. The Baía de São Marcos has one of the largest tidal ranges in Brazil — several meters on spring tides — so the beach shape, sandbars and current change dramatically within a single session. Locals plan around the tide table, not just the wind.

Is Praia de São Marcos dangerous for kitesurfing?

It is rideable and ridden daily in season, but the ebb current deserves real respect — it can pull a downed rider seaward quickly, and it has driven genuine search-and-rescue operations. Ride with others, check the tide table, avoid the strongest ebb hours, and share your live position with someone on land.

When is the best time to kitesurf in São Luís?

July through December, with the strongest and most consistent wind from September to November — the same window as the rest of the Maranhão coast.
