AYON Wind · Spot guide

Kitesurfing Icaraí de Amontada.

Also known as Icaraizinho, Icaraí de Amontada is the spot riders point to when they say Jericoacoara was better twenty years ago — six kilometers of beach, small pousadas, and a genuine fishing-village pace with none of the crowd.

How the wind works

The same South Atlantic trades that power Jericoacoara arrive here with comparable strength, side-onshore along most of the beach. The variety comes from the beach itself: flat water near the bay's eastern point at low tide, small waves rolling into the bay at high tide, and a proper wave zone further along toward Icaraizinho where the wind blows hardest.

Best season

Roughly July through February in a good year, running a touch longer than the spots closer to Fortaleza. Side-onshore trades hold 20–35 knots through the peak months.

Conditions by level

Beginner

The flat sections near the bay at low tide are sheltered enough to learn on, though the wind here runs stronger than Cumbuco's lagoons — a lesson with a local school is the easier way in.

Intermediate

Six kilometers of beach means room to find your own conditions — flat water for progression in the morning, building chop and small waves as the tide turns.

Advanced

The wave zone toward Icaraizinho holds real swell, and this is one of the coast's best-positioned spots for a downwind mission — north toward Guajiru or south toward Patos.

Watch out for

  • Conditions vary a lot along the six kilometers of beach — the bay, the point, and the wave zone can all be doing something different on the same day.
  • Wind strength is comparable to Jericoacoara — pack smaller than you think, especially for afternoon sessions.
  • Fewer people around than Jeri or Cumbuco means less help nearby if something goes wrong — ride with a buddy where you can.
  • Downwind legs toward Guajiru or Patos cover real distance — confirm a pickup before you launch.

Getting there

About two and a half hours by road from Fortaleza (roughly 200 km), or closer to two hours from Jericoacoara's airport (about 120 km). Car hire, private transfer, or bus to Amontada with a local connection all work.
