AYON Wind · Spot guide

Kitesurfing Preá.

Fifteen minutes from Jericoacoara but a different pace entirely, Preá is where a lot of Jeri regulars actually stay — a fishing village with flatter water, fewer crowds, and the same relentless wind, plus a front-row seat to one of Ceará's most popular downwinders.

How the wind works

Preá sits on the same stretch of coast as Jericoacoara and reads the same E to ENE trades, reinforced by a strong daily thermal in season. The bay here tends to be a touch flatter and less crowded than Jeri's main beach, with the wind just as reliable.

Best season

Roughly July through December, matching Jericoacoara's window — strong, steady trades through the dry season.

Conditions by level

Beginner

Flatter, quieter water than Jeri's main beach makes this a solid place to learn, provided you respect that the wind still runs strong most afternoons.

Intermediate

Steady side-shore wind and open bay space for boosting and progression — and the Preá → Jericoacoara downwinder is right at your feet when you're ready.

Advanced

Use Preá as a downwind base in both directions — toward Jeri on the classic 12 km leg, or further up the coast toward Tatajuba and Guajiru.

Watch out for

  • The wind is genuinely strong most afternoons — pack smaller than your home-spot instinct suggests.
  • Beach and lagoon shape shift with the tide; check timing before a flat-water session.
  • Downwind legs toward Jeri or Tatajuba cover real distance — confirm your pickup before launching.
  • Fewer schools than Jeri itself — lessons are available but book ahead in peak season.

Getting there

Fly into Jericoacoara (JJD) or Fortaleza; Preá is a short transfer from either — closer to the airport than Jeri's village center, which is why many riders base here.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Preá or Jericoacoara?

Many Jeri regulars actually stay in Preá — it is quieter, has flatter water, fewer crowds, and sits closer to the airport (JJD) than Jeri's village center. Jericoacoara has more nightlife and more schools.
