How it works here
The Dana Point headland and harbor breakwater shelter Doheny from the full force of west and northwest swell, so what arrives at the beach is smaller and better-groomed than nearby unprotected breaks — the tradeoff riders make for that protection is less outright size and power. The wave wraps gently around the point at the harbor mouth, producing long, soft, rolling rights that are exactly what a first-timer wants.

- Because it's sheltered, conditions can look deceptively small from the beach — always check actual wave height before assuming it's flat.
- San Juan Creek empties nearby; water quality can dip after rain, as at most Southern California river-mouth beaches.
