Surf forecast: Gold Coast (Coolangatta & Kirra).

The Gold Coast's southern end is home to Snapper Rocks and the Superbank — on its day, one of the longest, fastest, most perfect point waves anywhere on the planet, and a regular World Surf League tour stop. It is not where beginners learn. The gentler beach breaks at Coolangatta and Kirra's front beach, a short walk away, are.

How it works here

Coolangatta Beach and the sandy front stretch of Kirra are open beach breaks, softer and more forgiving than the point-wave power just up the sand at Snapper and Kirra Point — the same geography that makes the Superbank so famous also means the adjacent beaches catch a gentler, more spread-out version of the same swell.

Bottom
Sand at the beach breaks; sand-and-rock at the points nearby.

Best season

Rideable year-round in warm, subtropical water. Autumn through spring (roughly March–October, with a notable cyclone-swell window around March) brings the Gold Coast's biggest and most famous surf; summer is smaller and more beginner-friendly.

Conditions by level

Beginner

Coolangatta Beach and Kirra's front beach are the actual answer for learning here — open, sandy, forgiving whitewash well away from the points' speed and crowd intensity.

Intermediate

A good place to build real wave count on manageable peaks, with the option to paddle toward the points on a smaller day once you're ready.

Advanced

The reason this stretch of coast is world-famous — Snapper Rocks and the Superbank on a good day connect into one of the longest, fastest point waves on Earth, a serious, heavily crowded world-tour wave.

Watch out for

  • Don't confuse the beach breaks with the points — Snapper/Superbank and Kirra Point are fast, powerful, and not for beginners.
  • Heavy crowds at the points, spilling over into the adjacent beach breaks on a good swell.
  • Rip currents near the training walls and river mouth at the southern end.

Getting there

Right by Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) — one of the most accessible surf destinations in Australia, about an hour south of Brisbane.
