How to read a swell forecast

Most forecasts hand you a number and leave. This explains what the numbers actually mean together — and why the wave height, the one figure everybody quotes, is the least informative of the four.

The problem with "it's 4 foot"

Two forecasts both say four feet. One session is weak, crumbly and frustrating; the other is powerful, clean and among the best of the month. Nothing about the height was wrong — height simply doesn't carry enough information to describe surf.

What separates those two days is period, direction, wind and tide — read against the specific break you're standing in front of.

1. Period: how much energy is behind the wave

Period is the gap, in seconds, between one wave and the next. It is the single most useful number in a surf forecast and the one most often ignored.

The reason is physical. In deep water, longer-period waves travel faster and carry their energy deeper below the surface. A long-period swell therefore arrives having organised itself over hundreds or thousands of miles of open ocean, and it "feels" the sea floor earlier as it approaches the coast — which is why it stands up and breaks with far more force than a short-period wave of the same height.

Short period

≈ 5–8 s

Local windswell. Weak, disorganised, close together. Often barely worth the paddle.

Mid period

≈ 9–12 s

Mixed. Rideable and common; enough push for most beginner and intermediate sessions.

Long period

≈ 13 s +

Groundswell from a distant storm. Powerful, organised, well-spaced sets — and noticeably bigger on the face than the number suggests.

These bands are a practical rule of thumb for reading a forecast, not a physical constant — the boundaries shift with local bathymetry and how exposed a coast is.

2. Direction: whether the swell can reach you at all

Swell direction is reported in degrees — the compass bearing the swell is coming from. On its own that number means nothing. It only becomes useful when you read it against a specific break's exposure window: the arc of directions that can actually reach that stretch of coast, given headlands, offshore islands, harbour walls and the angle of the shoreline.

This is why a big swell can produce almost nothing at one beach while a smaller one lights it up, and why two breaks a few hundred yards apart can be completely different on the same day. It is also why AYON Wave scores direction per spot rather than reporting a raw bearing.

3. Wind: what happens to the face

Swell decides whether there are waves. Wind decides what they look like when they arrive. Offshore wind — blowing from the land out to sea — holds the face up and grooms it clean. Onshore wind flattens and disorganises the same swell into crumbling chop.

Because "offshore" is relative to the direction the coast faces, the same wind can be perfect at one beach and ruinous at another a few miles away. Timing matters too: many coastlines are cleanest at dawn, before the day's thermal sea breeze builds.

4. Tide: the window, not the number

Tide changes the depth of water over the sandbar, reef or point that makes the wave break. Plenty of breaks only work across part of the tidal range — too low and it breaks too hard in shallow water or dries out entirely; too high and the swell rolls through without standing up.

The practical consequence is that a surf forecast is a question about when, not just whether. A day can be excellent for two hours and mediocre for the other ten.

Putting it together

Reading a forecast well means asking four questions in order, not reading one number:

  1. 1. Is there real energy? — look at period before height.
  2. 2. Can it reach this break? — direction against exposure.
  3. 3. Will the face be clean? — wind against the coast's orientation.
  4. 4. When is the window? — tide stage across the day.

And then the question no forecast can answer for you: is this within your ability today? A day that reads "excellent" for an experienced surfer can be genuinely dangerous for a beginner. The honest answer changes with the person, not just the ocean.

On sources and limits

The wave physics described here is standard oceanography — the relationship between period, wave speed and energy in deep water is textbook material, not an AYON finding. The period bands are a practical reading heuristic, not a physical threshold. Everything a forecast produces is modeled data: a computed estimate of future conditions, never an observation, and never a guarantee of safety. Conditions on the beach, and your own judgment, always outrank a model.

What does swell period mean in a surf forecast?

Period is the time in seconds between successive waves passing a point. It is the best single indicator of how much energy a swell carries: short-period swell (roughly under 8–9 seconds) is usually local windswell with little power, while long-period groundswell (roughly 13 seconds and up) has travelled from a distant storm and breaks with far more force at the same nominal height.

Why do two 4-foot forecasts produce completely different surf?

Because height is only one of four variables. A 4-foot swell at 7 seconds from an unfavourable direction, with onshore wind and a wrong tide, is weak, messy and barely rideable. The same 4 feet at 15 seconds, arriving inside the break's exposure window with light offshore wind on a workable tide, is a powerful, clean session. Same number, different ocean.

Does swell direction matter more than swell size?

Often, yes. Every break has an exposure window — the arc of directions that can actually reach it, given headlands, islands and the shape of the coast. A large swell arriving outside that window may produce almost nothing, while a moderate swell arriving straight down the window produces excellent surf.

What is the difference between groundswell and windswell?

Windswell is generated by local wind close to the coast: short period, choppy, and short-lived. Groundswell is generated by distant storms and has travelled far enough for the waves to organise into longer-period, more uniform sets. Groundswell generally produces cleaner, more powerful and more predictable surf.
