A count without a denominator isn't a measurement
Catching eight waves sounds like a good session. But eight out of how many? On a relentless day with sets every ninety seconds, eight is a quiet session. On a slow day where twelve rideable waves came through in two hours, eight is exceptional.
The number that describes a surfer, rather than the day, is a rate — and a rate needs both halves. This is the same reason a shooting percentage tells you more than a points total.
Four words that are not synonyms
Opportunity
A wave the surfer could reasonably have gone for. This is the denominator, and it is the hardest thing to count honestly — which is exactly why most progress tracking quietly skips it.
Attempt
A wave they actually tried to catch. Including the ones that didn't work. A tracking system that only notices successes will systematically flatter every surfer who uses it.
Success
An attempt that worked — by a stated definition, applied the same way every time. "Stood up" and "rode the face under control" are different bars, and a progression model has to say which it is using.
Competency
A skill demonstrated repeatedly, across different sessions and conditions. One good ride proves the ride. Ten across three sessions start to prove the surfer.
Detection is a question. Verification is an answer.
Wrist-worn motion sensors can flag that something distinctive happened at a moment in time. That is genuinely useful — it turns a two-hour session into a short list of moments worth looking at.
What it is not is proof. A flagged moment is a candidate: the system noticed motion, not a manoeuvre. Whether that moment was a successful pop-up, a failed attempt, or nothing at all is a question a human answers — the surfer reviewing their own session, or a coach who was watching.
AYON keeps those two things structurally separate, and never lets an algorithm's guess be relabelled as a fact. A machine estimate is never "confirmed"; only a person confirming it makes it so.
Why safety can't be averaged in
Progression models are tempting to collapse into a single score. Surfing resists it, for a reason that matters: a surfer can have an excellent pop-up and still be unready for a bigger, more crowded, more consequential break — because paddling out safely, reading a rip, holding a position in a lineup and getting out of the water in control are separate competencies from standing up on a board.
Motor skill alone should never unlock a readiness claim when safety and independence evidence is missing. In practice that means readiness is a set of gates, each of which has to hold — not an average that a strong number in one column can carry.
This page describes a framework and a set of rules, not study results. AYON has not published a validation study of automated surf-manoeuvre detection, and nothing here should be read as reporting detection accuracy, success rates or any measured performance figure. Where such claims eventually appear, they will be accompanied by the dataset, method and limitations behind them.
AYON's evidence vocabulary is fixed and used consistently across the product: modeled (a computed estimate), measured (a directly recorded value), detected (an algorithmic candidate), reported (a rider's own account) and verified (reviewed and confirmed by a person). Confidence describes the strength of evidence — never a promise of safety.

Why isn't "how many waves did you catch?" a good measure of surf progression?
Because it has no denominator. Ten waves caught in a two-hour session of relentless sets is a different achievement from ten waves in a session where only twelve came through. Without knowing how many opportunities existed, a count of successes describes the ocean's generosity as much as the surfer's skill.
What is the difference between an attempt and an opportunity?
An opportunity is a wave a surfer could reasonably have gone for. An attempt is a wave they actually tried to catch. A success is an attempt that worked. Progression only becomes measurable when all three are counted with the same eligibility rules — a success rate computed against an unknown or inconsistent denominator is not a measurement.
Can an Apple Watch tell that you stood up on a wave?
A wrist sensor can detect that a distinctive movement occurred. That is a candidate — a flagged moment worth reviewing — not a confirmed manoeuvre. AYON's design treats detection and verification as separate things: the watch raises the question, and a human answers it.
What makes a surfer ready for intermediate surfing?
Not a single number. Readiness is a set of separate competencies — ocean awareness, catching waves, standing up, controlling the board, riding an unbroken face, and doing all of it safely and independently — demonstrated repeatedly across different sessions and conditions, rather than once on a perfect day.
